It seems to be forcing the diesel engine manufacturers into a tizzy. Honda has pulled the plug on the production of its i-DTEC Diesel engine. This will affect both the 1.5-liter version used in India and 1.6 liter version exported to other markets. RDE norms are the extension of BSVI guidelines requiring stricter emission targets, particularly for particulate matter (PM) and NOx. These norms dictate that the engines would need to meet the targets in the real-world driving scenario instead of just on an engine test bench.
As these norms will come into effect starting April 2023, the Japanese carmaker has finally decided that it is done with the diesel engine in India. While customers can still buy diesel-powered Honda cars until March-end, the production will be phased out by February 2023.This effectively means that diesel engine-powered Honda Amaze, City, Jazz and the WR-V crossover will see a complete stop in production.
To meet the new RDE norms, auto companies will have to significantly upgrade their diesel engines, and this would require major investments. The upgradation costs are seen as unfeasible and thus brands like Honda have decided to rather completely phase them out. Shifting consumer preference towards petrol engine cars in recent years could be a contributing factor in this decision. The HCIL’s suppliers have reportedly been notified well in advance, and the company’s plant in Rajasthan will cease production. Looks, like the Japanese OEM will from here on focus on its well-known i-VTEC petrol engine and the string hybrid powertrain technology.
It’s not just Honda alone. Maruti Suzuki has completely dropped its diesel engine variants, as have Renault, Nissan, Volkswagen , and Skoda. Hyundai will also no longer offer the diesel variant in its small cars. Toyota has also been shifting away from diesel. While Tata and Mahindra continue to offer diesel versions, they have also been heavily investing in the electric vehicle segment. Meanwhile, Honda is about to bring in a brand-new SUV to the Indian market. Codenamed: 3US, it will add to Honda’s SUV portfolio.
