In recently conducted Global NCAP crash tests, the Citroen eC3 electric hatchback was rated zero stars for adult occupant safety and received a one-star rating for child occupant safety. This makes it one of the last vehicles assessed under the #SaferCarsForIndia campaign, as all future models designed for Indian consumers will be subjected to the Bharat NCAP’s rigorous crash testing.
Despite the bodyshell being rated as 'stable' and capable of withstanding further pressures, the low ratings arose due to lacking safety features and insufficient protection. In terms of the numeric scores, adult occupant protection was assessed with 20.86 out of 34 points, while child occupant protection received 10.55 points out of a possible 49.
When looking at individual areas of the vehicle and its occupancy during the frontal impact test at 64 kmph, the head and neck of the driver and passenger received a 'good' safety rating. However, the chest protection for the driver was deemed 'weak,' and the passenger's chest protection was branded as 'poor.'
The driver’s knee protection was assessed as ‘marginal,' but passenger's knees received ‘good’ protection. Similarly, driver's tibias were characterised as having ‘marginal and good’ protection, while the passenger’s tibias had ‘good’ protection. On the other hand, the footwell area was marked as ‘unstable.'
In the side impact test conducted at 50 kmph, 'marginal' protection was noted for the head and 'adequate' for the chest. However, the vehicle offered ‘good’ protection for adult occupants' abdomen and pelvis region.
On contrary, no side pole impact test was performed since the eC3 doesn't come with side airbags as standard equipment. Citroen, however, has pledged that starting in July 2024, all models earmarked for sale in India will come equipped with six standard airbags.
One glaring omission in the eC3's feature list is the Electronic Stability Control (ESC), a requirement from GNCAP these days. Compounding this deficiency, the seatbelt restraint system failed to meet the minimum standards set by the testing agency, leading to the eC3's zero-star rating.
When it comes to child occupant protection, the forward-facing child seat for a 3-year-old was unable to fully protect the dummy's head during the frontal impact test. In contrast, the rearward-facing child seat for a 1.5-year-old dummy was successful in providing complete head protection. Even though a full side impact test showed the head might be susceptible to crash-related injuries, eC3 was found lacking essential features like 3-point seatbelts in all seating positions and two standard ISOFIX mounts. Additionally, the vehicle lacks the ability to deactivate the passenger airbag for rearward facing child seat installation.
Furthermore, the Citroen eC3's basic safety features include only dual front airbags, ABS with EBD, rear parking sensors, and front seatbelt reminders. Available in three primary versions – Live, Feel, and Shine – the model's price ranges from Rs 11.61 lakh to Rs 13.35 lakh (ex-showroom Delhi).
